Elizabeth Michaels as Rosie the Riveter: “We Can Do It!”
Rosie the Riveter has been a popular American cultural icon for generations: an inspiring image of a strong, capable woman, rising to the challenge of her era. In times of war, women are often called upon to take on tasks traditionally considered “men’s work” and have shown themselves more than equal to the task. Is it perhaps more difficult for these women to return to their old, traditionally female, roles once the war has ended and the men have returned home? This program examines the difficulties these women experienced at each end of the conflict. This program is funded by the Horizons Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The program is produced by the American Historical Theater, a nonprofit organization specializing in first-person living history presentations.
